‘I’m Trying To Prove Myself Every Night’: Ty Emberson Reflects On His Time With The Sharks

Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Ty Emberson is a 24-year-old defenseman from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who has been making a name for himself with the Edmonton Oilers.

Emberson’s journey to the NHL has been one with many stops. Initially drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018, Emberson spent some time developing with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL. He was later moved to the New York Rangers before the 22-23 season and played for the Hartford Wolf Pack.

He made his NHL debut in 2023 with the San Jose Sharks. Following an injury-riddled season, San Jose traded the d-man to the Oilers. Despite the up-and-down season, he’s been a solid contributor on their blue line.

“I had just re-signed the contract a couple of weeks prior [to the trade],” Emberson told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s always a shock when you get traded, but I was excited to come up to Edmonton and prove myself.”

Emberson is no stranger to the ups and downs of an NHL career. Reflecting on his trade from the Sharks, Emberson shared his initial surprise and excitement about the opportunity. 

“It’s always an adjustment to go to a new place, but all the guys were super welcoming,” Emberson said. “[I] spent more time on my body this summer, rehabbing my foot, making sure I was healthy. I think this year has been good. So knock on wood, I’ve been able to stay healthy, and hopefully, we can keep that going.”

Emberson’s time in San Jose wasn’t without its challenges. Despite the Sharks’ struggles, he found value in being thrown into challenging situations and often logged significant minutes on the ice. In 30 games for the Sharks, Emberson averaged 18:33 time on ice a night. With Edmonton, the d-man is playing 14:51.

That didn’t stop Emberson from saying his role with the Sharks helped his development as a young NHL defenseman.

“It was a frustrating year last year [with injuries], but it was awesome for me just to be able to break into the league. I have nothing but great things to say about the [Sharks] and the guys here. They gave me a chance to play in this league,” Emberson said. “Sometimes the best way to learn stuff is just to get tossed into the fire.”

With a young, rebuilding team, Emberson played a key role in his development, learning from experienced teammates like current Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro.

“Being able to play with a guy like [Ferraro] who had played a couple years in the league and understood what it took to be regular,” Emberson said.

Emberson on how Edmonton is different than San Jose

Now, in Edmonton, things are different for Emberson. While the Oilers have a deeper, more veteran roster, he’s embraced the learning curve, especially with the leadership on the blue line. 

“It’s awesome to be able to learn from them day in and day out,” he said, referring to veteran players on the team. 

As Emberson continues to evolve as an NHL player, he’s looking ahead, aiming to simplify his game and build on his past experiences.

“I think I’m still finding my game, but I’m trying to prove myself every night,” Emberson explained.

Emberson continues to maintain poise and humility on and off the ice. He is one to watch as he continues to progress.

With a solid foundation in place, Emberson has the tools to continue growing into an even bigger role with the Oilers.
