San Jose Sharks prospect Joey Muldowney and UConn were eliminated from the NCAA Hockey Tournament on Sunday, but that didn’t stop the winger from putting on a show.
Fellow Sharks prospect Reese Laubach and Penn State defeated UConn 3-2 in overtime in the Allentown Regional Final.

Muldowney scored a goal in the game and was all over the place during overtime. The 2022 6th round finished the game with six shots, which was tied for the most across both teams. He rang a shot off the post and had other high-quality chances to win the game for his team.

Muldowney had a breakout season for UConn in 24-25. The Sophomore finished the season with 29 goals and 18 assists in 39 games. During the ’23-’24 season, Muldowney had five goals and nine assists in 35 games.
During UConn’s first game of the NCAA Tournament, Muldowney scored a goal against Quinnipiac.

During the Hockey East Tournament, UConn reached the Final but lost to Maine. In the first two games of that tourney, the Sharks prospect scored five goals, including a hat trick against Boston University.
Do the San Jose Sharks sign Muldowney?
With Muldowney’s season in the books, the question then turns to whether the San Jose Sharks should sign the winger.
The first drawback is his size. Muldowney is listed at 5’11, 154 lbs on Elite Prospects. While most teams can overcome his height, at 154 lbs, he is not strong enough to play against 25+-aged players at the NHL or AHL level.
He’s smart enough to perform at a high level, but the best course of action is likely heavy training over the summer and possibly signing with the Sharks before training camp.

Muldowney could also return to UConn for his Junior season and sign with the Sharks around this time next season.
Regardless of when he signs, Muldowney is the latest breakout Sharks’ prospect Mike Grier has brought into the organization.
