Mario Ferraro Out For Remainder Of Sharks Season With Injury

San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro will miss the rest of the 24-25 season due to a lower-body injury.

The d-man was the only player in the Sharks lineup to have played every game, and coach Ryan Warsofsky said playing 82 games was a goal of Ferraro’s this season.

Ferraro was injured while blocking a shot near the end of the second period against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday.

“That’s who he is. He gives everything he’s got on the ice. He puts his face in front of shots. If you watched the one he blocked last night, he could easily get out of the way. He turns his foot and blocks it,” Warsofsky said. “Not many players would do that in this league and give him a lot of credit because he does it game in and game out.”

The 26-year-old defenseman was recently named the San Jose Sharks’ King Clancy Trophy nominee.

How do the Sharks replace Ferraro?

Jan Rutta has missed the past 27 games with an injury, but he is on a road trip and could return to the lineup against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. If he can’t play, the Sharks will be forced to call someone up from the AHL.

“I think a guy like Henry Thrun and a guy like [Timothy Liljegren] are two guys that have to step up,” Warsofsky said. “[Jack] Thompson, I think, is playing some better hockey. [He’s] another guy that needs to continue playing at this level. I would say all six of our D, whoever’s in the lineup tomorrow, have to be ready for 7:30. [Edmonton is a] high offensive team.”
