According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the San Jose Barracuda have extended head coach John McCarthy.
McCarthy’s first season as head coach was the 2022-2023 season. He became the Barracuda’s second coach in team history after Roy Sommer stepped away. In the three seasons with McCarthy as the bench boss, the San Jose Barracuda own a record of 91-95-30.
The 24-25 season was the first time the Barracuda made the playoffs under McCarthy. With arguably his most talented roster, McCarthy led his team to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
He’ll have an even larger task in 25-26, as reigning AHL MVP Andrew Poturalski won’t be back, most likely. On Friday, Poturalski and the San Jose Sharks agreed to terminate the final year of his contract at the request of the player.
There is a report that Poturalski is headed to the KHL, but the information has not been confirmed.
McCarthy will also likely be without Yaroslav Askarov. The AHL All-Star goalie is poised to make the jump to the NHL in a full-time position. The San Jose Barracuda played their best with Askarov in the net.
As for McCarthy, neither the San Jose Barracuda nor the Sharks have announced an official extension for the former team captain turned coach. News of the extension could drop at any time.
