BUFFALO — The San Jose Sharks have selected forward Ivar Stenberg with the 2nd-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Stenberg is a Swedish winger and is considered the best European prospect in the 2026 Draft class. In 43 games with Frolunda, Stenberg had 11 goals and 22 assists.
Following the Toronto Maple Leafs selection of Gavin McKenna No. 1 overall, GM Mike Grier had a decision to make for the San Jose Sharks. Throughout the draft process, Grier has repeatedly told reporters that he will select the best player available. Rumors circulated that San Jose was drafting a defenseman, like Chase Reid. Ultimately, that talk died down after William Eklund was traded.
Stenberg has a chance to turn pro with the San Jose Sharks right away. Many prospect experts believe Stenberg is the most NHL-ready player of the draft.

He’s a chess master with an impeccable awareness of his surroundings, capable of manipulating entire defensive schemes to create for himself and his linemates and taking advantage of even the tiniest openings.”
This pick is now the Sharks’ fourth straight top-five pick, and third straight within the top two of the NHL Draft.
PWHL San Jose 4th overall pick Laila Edwards announced the selection.
Stenberg will be interviewed by reporters shortly.
