The San Jose Sharks have announced four alternate captains behind captain Macklin Celebrini, all veterans.

Joining the 20-year-old captain will be Tyler Toffoli, Barclay Goodrow, Alexander Wennberg, and Darnell Nurse. Wennberg and Goodrow will wear the ‘A’ during home games. Nurse and Toffoli will wear the ‘A’ on the road.

Nurse is the only newcomer from the leadership group who wasn’t here last season. That doesn’t mean the defenseman isn’t already a leader in the locker room.

“His experience. He’s been in the league a long time. He’s seen a lot of winning. What he did in Edmonton, I know they didn’t win a Cup, but he was a big part of those teams, and the Stanley Cup Final,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “He understands what it looks like and how to get there, and I think he can help our group.”

Other San Jose Sharks leaders talked about the importance of a guy like Nurse being a leader on the team.

“He’s been around for a long time now. You can tell, in leading up to training camp, that he’s a natural leader and obviously a huge part of our back end, huge part of our team. So we’re happy to have him,” Groodrow said.

For Nurse, he’s already comfortable speaking up with his new team.

“That goes with the leading by example part first. When you try to come out, work, and do the right things each and every day, and you have something to say,” Nurse said. “It’s not always just about talk, but there are moments that you learn throughout your career when maybe something needs to be said, or you know, if you have a quieter group, something needs to be said. Just bringing that life and energy. I’m definitely confident and willing to do it.”

The San Jose Sharks begin their season on Thursday against the Florida Panthers.
