It is now official. The San Jose Sharks have named Macklin Celebrini the next captain on Friday.

Former Sharks captain Joe Thornton helped with the team announcement, as seen in the video posted on social media.

Friday morning, the Sharks announced an official press conference that includes GM Mike Grier, Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky, and the aforementioned Celebrini.

Celebrini, 20 years old and 104 days old, becomes the sixth youngest captain in NHL history. He comes in just behind former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who was 20 years and 80 days old when he was given the ‘C’.

If/when Celebrini is named captain, he will be the first Sharks player to wear the ‘C’ since Logan Couture. Couture last played six NHL games during the 23-24 season.

Grier told reporters after the first day of San Jose Sharks training camp that the decision to name a captain wouldn’t be taken lightly. The GM said he believes the honor of wearing the ‘C’ is “sacred” and wanted to make sure the next player to get it is a Shark for a long time.

Celebrini signed a five-year, $94 million contract this summer that will keep him in teal through the 31-32 season. The Sharks center got experience over the summer as the captain of Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships.

SHD will attend Friday’s practice and press conference. The event will also be livestreamed across Sharks social platforms and the team website.
