The San Jose Sharks go to a shootout yet again, but lose to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Saturday, with top performances from Macklin Celebrini and Ivar Stenberg.
Darnell Nurse also returned to the Sharks lineup after missing one game with an upper-body injury. Alex Nedeljkovic got a second straight start and made 25 saves. Dmitry Orlov also scored for Team Teal, his first of the season.
Celebrini finished the night with three points (one goal, two assists), and Stenberg had one of each. The power play clicked all night, going 2-for-6 and generating chance after chance. Except in overtime, when they needed it most.
Emmitt Finnie, Alex DaBrincat, and Justin Faulk scored for Detroit. John Gibson made 32 saves. Lucas Raymond scored the shootout-winning goal.
First period
Faulk gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 12:45 of the first period. After the Sharks couldn’t score on their first opportunity, not for lack of chances, the veteran defenseman’s wrist shot beat Nedeljkovic up high through a screen.
Orlov tied the game at one with a power-play goal at 17:59. After some patient passing by the entire unit, Ivar Stenbreg bumped a pass to the point, and his one-timer beat Gibson over the blocker.
Second period
Celebrini gave the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 lead at 4:55 of the second period. After a terrific pinch by Michael Kesselring kept the puck in, he found Will Smith on the far side. He made a one-touch pass to the captain, who fired a powerful one-timer over Gibson’s glove.
Third period
Stenberg put the San Jose Sharks up 3-1 with another power-play goal at 2:48 of the third period. After Celebrini fed Alexander Wennberg down low, the veteran center pulled defenders to him and slid a pass to Stenberg at the top of the crease for the goal.
Finnie cut the lead back to one for the Red Wings with a tap-in goal at 4:59.
Alex DaBrincat tied the game at three with 1:35 remaining in the third
Overtime
Celebrini drew a power play with 2:28 left in OT.
The Sharks couldn’t convert and headed to another shootout.
Shootout
Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal, giving the Red Wings the 4-3 win.
