Yet another coaching change has been made in the NHL, as the Dallas Stars have relieved former San Jose Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer.

DeBoer spent three seasons in Dallas, leading them to the Western Conference Final each year, but no further.

Despite winning many games and advancing deep into the playoffs, the Stars never managed to overcome the hump. Reports say DeBoer had one year left on his contract.

Changes to the Dallas Stars’ roster and coaching staff have been rumored since the team’s Game 5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The future of pending UFAs Jamie Benn or Tyler Seguin. Jake Oettinger’s possible frustration from being pulled abruptly by DeBoer. Even the chance that they move on from two-time 40-goal scorer Jason Robertson has been rumored.

A Pete DeBoer-coached team has made the WCF in six of the last seven Stanley Cup Playoffs. He took the San Jose Sharks in 2019. The Vegas Golden Knights in 2020 and 2021. Finally, the Stars in 2023-2025.

DeBoer has been to the Stanley Cup Final twice, first with the New Jersey Devils in 2012 and with the Sharks in 2016. He lost both times.

The Dallas Stars now remain the only NHL franchise with a coaching vacancy after a bevy of recent hires around the league.
