San Jose Sharks top prospect Sam Dickinson had a stellar Draft +1 season with the London Knights.
His 91 points (29 goals, 62 assists) led the Knights in scoring. He was named the OHL’s best defenseman and helped lead his team to an OHL championship and Memorial Cup.
His play partially led to the Sharks’ buyout of longtime d-man Marc-Edouard Vlasic. When Sharks general manager Mike Grier spoke to the media yesterday, he discussed how Dickinson’s uprising affected the buyout.
“It was just a decision I had to make [that] I thought was best in the organization’s [interest],” Grier said. “Especially after you watch Sam tear through the Memorial Cup Playoffs and the OHL playoffs. We had to have a discussion here and and see which path we wanted to go down.”
Grier emphasized that he didn’t want to get into a “he said, she said” situtaion regarding how his exit meeting went with Vlasic.
“I’m happy and and fine with how I ended the meeting with him. I thought it was pretty clear about the possibilities of things,” Grier said.
Vlasic wants to stay in the NHL but is not currently skating for any team. The 38-year-old spent his entire career with the San Jose Sharks, playing 1,323 career games.
