It is official! The San Jose Sharks finished last in the NHL, which means they will have the best odds for the first pick in the draft for the second straight season.

When the Chicago Blackhawks went to overtime against the Winnipeg Jets, they moved six points ahead of the Sharks in the standings. With three games left and lacking a tiebreaker, the Sharks cannot catch them.

Last season, San Jose was awarded the No. 1 pick for the first time in team history. What followed was franchise altering. Macklin Celebrini was selected first overall and became the Sharks’ cornerstone player.

Not only did the Sharks win the lottery for the first time in team history, but they won so many times in a row that multiple redraws had to happen. Eventually, the Blackhawks won the second pick and drafted Artyom Levshunov.

In 2025, the attention will turn to two players for the No. 1 pick: Michael Misa or Matthew Schaefer.
