Former San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund suffered a serious ankle injury for the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

On Friday, the Senators announced that Eklund will miss “an extended period of time.” In their game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Eklund was checked into the boards, and his leg was put into an awkward position. The winger would not return after just four shifts.

Fortunately for the former San Jose Sharks winger, the Senators don’t expect him to need surgery and believe he’ll return before the end of the season.

Eklund was traded to the Senators for the 9th-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft last summer. The Sharks would select Keaton Verheoff with the pick they acquired.

Eklund had been reunited with former San Joe Sharks teammate Fabian Zetterlund in Ottawa, and the two recreated their instant chemistry. Eklund has one goal and one assist, and Zetterlund has two assists. The analytical numbers were among the league’s highest in offensive chances generated.

The Senators play the Sharks in San Jose on October 31st, which Eklund now is in danger of missing.
