The San Jose Sharks announce the signing of defenseman Jacob Trouba to a four-year contract with an AAV of $8.25 million.

Trouba, 32, is a right-handed veteran defenseman of 906 career NHL games. Trouba has played for the Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, and, most recently, the Anaheim Ducks. Last season, Trouba had a solid rebound-type season with the Ducks. In 81 games, the new San Jose Sharks defenseman had 10 goals and 25 assists.

The 6-foot-3 defenseman will fill a massive hole on the right side of the blueline, as well as adding some physicality. Trouba had 143 hits last season. He will be a strong penalty killer and clog the middle of the ice, something the Sharks need badly.

With reports that Vincent Desharnais won’t be re-signing with the Sharks, Trouba will fill his role and likely be an upgrade.

Trouba becomes GM Mike Grier’s second signing today. Mason Marchment was the first signing with a cap hit of $6.75 million.
