Former San Jose Sharks goaltender Alexandar Georgiev has found a new home in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres.
The 29-year-old goalie has had a rough go of late in the NHL. He struggled mightily with the Colorado Avalanche and continued with the Sharks following the Mackenzie Blackwood trade.
Georgiev played 49 games between the Sharks and Avalanche, starting 47 times. The now Sabres goalie had a 15-26-4 record, .875 save %, and a 3.71 goals against average.
The San Jose Sharks held an early exit meeting with the Bulgarian netminder. Georgiev told reporters following the last game of the season that the Sharks wouldn’t be retaining him, making him an unrestricted free agent.
It is unusual for teams to have an exit meeting with a player before the end of the season, but Sharks GM Mike Grier told reporters that it was due to a scheduling conflict.
“Georgie had a flight, so he couldn’t really stick around too long,” Grier said. “He asked to meet earlier, and I let him know we’d probably be going in a different direction.”
Georgiev’s contract is for one year and appears to be a one-way deal. The Sabres have their starting goalie in place in Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Top goalie prospect Devon Levi will push Georgiev for an NHL spot.
