San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier spoke to the media about his plans ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Sharks own two first-round picks this season, No. 2 and No. 30. Speculation on who Grier might select has ramped up in recent weeks. Whether the Sharks pick Michael Misa or Anton Frondell, Grier understands his team will get a good player.
“We’re just excited to get a good player,” Grier said. “I haven’t talked to [Mathieu Darche] about [the No. 1] pick or what he’s going to do with it. He’s got to make that decision. We’re just in a good spot where we’re going to get a good player, no matter who they take.”
Grier did confirm that the San Jose Sharks have received trade calls about the No. 2 pick. The GM said he listened to some offers, but nothing satisfied the price he was willing to move it for.
“We’ve had some offers for it, and some things to consider. I’m not out there shopping the pick,” Grier explained. “Like I said, I’m excited to add another really good player to our pool. When someone calls and presents you with something, you’ve got to listen to it and consider it. There’s been a few of those scenarios so far, and we’ll see what happens the rest of the week.”
New York Islanders GM Mathieu Darche spoke to the media before the draft as well. For the third time—and likely the final time—Darche said he is not trading the pick.
“I’m not trading the one, but you look at everything, right?” Darche said during his pre-draft media availability. “Teams are calling you about various options. Every time you hear something might be going on, you call a team, and my job is to do my due diligence and see what’s out there. Every single day, I’m trying to improve the New York Islanders.”
Grier did not completely shut down the possibility of trading the San Jose Sharks’ No. 2 pick, but it seems unlikely.
“As of right now, yeah,” Grier said about whether he intends to use the pick.
The San Jose Sharks will get a good player to pair with Macklin Celebrini if defenseman Matthew Schaefer goes first, which he’s projected to do. Grier is doing his job by at least listening to what teams have to offer for No. 2.
