Nick Leddy was placed on NHL Waivers by the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday, and the San Jose Sharks could be a team to claim the defenseman.
Leddy, 34, is a smooth-skating, left-handed defenseman with a championship pedigree. Leddy won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013.
The veteran d-man and the Blues were reportedly working on a trade partner to give him more opportunity to play, but nothing came to fruition.
With the San Jose Sharks needing to spend more this summer to reach the NHL salary cap floor, Leddy’s $4 million AAV can push that forward. Although he is another lefty, the Sharks continue to need puck movers on their blue line.
Leddy had averaged over 20 minutes a night for 11 straight seasons before 24-25. Last season, the potential San Jose Sharks waiver claim averaged 18:40. He played 31 games, scoring two goals and three assists, and finished as a +6.
If the Sharks want to add another smooth-skating veteran defenseman like John Klingberg, Leddy certainly fits that mold.
The Sharks finished in 32nd place last season, giving them top priority for potential waiver claims.
