Mason West should be on the San Jose Sharks draft radar.
The 6’6 218 lbs forward is a quarterback in his free time. A three-star QB recruit for Edina High School in Minnesota told reporters he’s going all in on hockey following his final season in football.
West is ranked 27th among North American Skaters for the NHL’s Central Scouting. He’s a raw talent who has played in the USHL with the Fargo Force. He played ten games in the 2024-2025 season, scoring one goal and eight assists.
West’s size and skating ability should appeal to San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier. Filip Bystedt, Quentin Musty, and Kasper Halttunen are all examples of big players Grier has drafted.
“The best way to describe him is he’s got his own list on each team’s draft board,” NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said on 32 Thoughts. “Every team gets a pick, from the second round on, he’ll be part of the conversation. Is now the time we take him? He’s really raw, but he’s big. He’s obviously a great athlete, and he can score.”
Friedman also explained that West often played the point on the power play for his high school team, despite being a forward.
The San Jose Sharks won’t draft him at No. 2, and maybe not even at No. 30. The Sharks have two second-round picks, No. 33 and No. 53. Ironically, the Sharks had the same two second-round picks in 2024, where they picked Igor Chernyshov and Leo Sahlin Wallenius.
If West is on the board to start day two, the San Jose Sharks might take a flyer on the Quarterback turned winger.
