NEW JERSEY – Dougie Hamilton scored twice and the New Jersey Devils beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 at Prudential Center.

William Eklund scored for the Sharks, his second goal of the season. Macklin Celebrini recorded the primary assist and now has 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists) over the last three games. Yaroslav Askarov had a strong game, making 27 saves.

Connor Brown had an empty net goal, and Jack Hughes had an assist. The Devils have won seven straight games. Jake Allen wasn’t very busy in the crease, stopping 16 shots en route to his fourth consecutive win.

The San Jose Sharks ended the Devils’ streak of 21 straight penalties killed with Eklund’s goal. However, the Sharks gave the Devils five power-play opportunities, which is where Hamilton did his damage.

“We gotta clean up our penalty kill. It’s costing us some games,” Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “I think our power play could be a little bit more of a threat at times as well. Our special teams, we got to get them improving.”

Fatigue certainly played a factor for San Jose, as they were outshot 12-0 in the second period. Askarov stood tall, but New Jersey hemmed them deep in the defensive zone.

“I was stuck with myself as well. Still [have] no idea [what was going on] with me before,” Askarov said postgame. “I know I wasn’t quite great before, but today, it’s a new day. This was a good game, and [I’m] just trying to keep it going, and be solid.”

Eklund scored a power play goal at 2:25 of the first period to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Celebrini bumped Eklund a pass on the right wing, and his wrist shot beat Allen’s blocker.

Hamilton ties the game 1-1 with a power play goal 40 seconds into the second period. After a scramble and Sharks’ bodies down in front of Askarov, Hamilton scored a wrist shot into the yawning cage by Askarov.

Hamilton’s second power play goal of the game gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 9:06. Jack Hughes found Hamilton in the high slot, and his one-timer beat Askarov over the blocker.

Brown scored an empty net goal on a breakaway with under a minute left in the third.
