Sharks Prospects Dealing With Long-Term Injuries

San Jose Sharks top prospect Quentin Musty was dealt a tough blow ahead of training camp; a severe facial injury will keep him out long-term.

As training camp began on Thursday, Musty and other prospects were noticeably absent from the ice. Musty, Filip Bystedt, Cam Lund, and goalie Kyle Keyser are all dealing with injuries. Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Mattias Havelid both missed the 2026 Rookie Faceoff but were spotted on the ice on Thursday. Wallenius participated in full.

San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier provided updates on each player, with Musty and Keyser being out the longest.

“We got a couple long-term ones that you guys won’t see for a while,” Grier said. “Keyser and Musty, they’ll be out for a while. They’re both upper-body injuries, and they’ll be out for a while. I wouldn’t expect to see them for a couple of months at least.”

Musty took a puck to the face in the first period of the San Jose Sharks’ second Rookie Faceoff game but returned wearing a full facial shield. When asked if that surprised Grier given the severity of the injury, his response was simple: “he’s a hockey player.”

Musty was excited to come to training camp and was gunning for a spot on the opening night roster. After an impressive performance at the rookie faceoff, the long-term injury is a big blow to the prospect’s chances of an early-season NHL call-up.

“Not only him, but all the guys. You got to have a positive attitude and keep your head up. Injuries happen in sports. We all go through them. You play long enough, you’re going to miss some time with injuries,” Grier said. “In talking to him, he’s a little bit down and disappointed. But all you can do is put your head down and get back to work. Attack your rehab, so when you are healthy, you’re ready to go. Hit the ground running and get your game back on track.”

Grier also confirmed that the signing of goalie Ilya Samsonov was in response to the Keyser injury.

As for Lund, the forward took an awkward hit in the first period of the first Sharks Rookie Faceoff game and is expected ot be out a month.

“Cam’s [injury will] probably [keep him out] a month or so, I would say,” Grier said. “He’s probably a bit longer than week to week. He’ll miss the start of the season.”

The rest of the roster is healthy, and all participated in the first day of training camp on Thursday,
