The San Jose Sharks are about to hit the road for a three-game trip and will take top prospect Eric Pohlkamp with them.
Pohlkamp, 22, has been recalled from the San Jose Barracuda for the first time in his professional hockey career. The team announced the roster move shortly after practice completed on Tuesday.
In 10 AHL games this season, the Sharks d-man has seven assists. He’s been thrust into a big role with the AHL club. Despite being a defenseman, Pohlkamp is second on the ‘Cuda in shots on goal with 28. Pohlkamp is highly regarded throughout the organization and remained with the NHL late into training camp.
During the San Jose Sharks preseason, Pohlkamp appeared in three of four games. He had nine shots on goal and registered one goal and one assist. The Hobey Baker Award finalist last season could make his NHL debut as soon as Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
SHD recently spoke with Pohlkamp’s former Denver University teammate and d-partner Zeev Buium of the Vancouver Canucks about how Pohlkamp’s game can translate to the NHL.
“He’s a beauty. He’ll be just fine. I think he’s a really great player and a big personality. Someone I love to be around and who was super fun to play with,” Buium said on Oct. 29. “He’s a great player. He plays super hard, and I think everyone knows we all go through it together just to enjoy every moment and not take it for granted.”
The San Jose Sharks have played four left-handed defensemen on their blue line all season. With the addition of Pohlkamp, head coach Ryan Warsofsky can now make each d-pair have one righty and one lefty.
