San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky was chosen to lead Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Championship and has done well.
With a 6-2 win over host Sweden in the semi-final on Saturday, the Americans will play in the gold medal game for the first time in 91 years (1934).
“Every single guy contributed to the win and I couldn’t be more proud of our group,” Warsofsky said postgame. “We’ll focus on getting some rest and be ready to play tomorrow.”
Sharks forward Will Smith played 13:14 and recorded an assist on USA’s second goal of the game by former Boston College teammate Cutter Gauthier. Smith has seven assists in nine games.
It is important to note that USA Hockey’s last silver medal at Worlds came in 1950; it wasn’t at the official tournament. Until 1968, the IIHF counted the medals won during the Olympics as the World Championship.
Warsofsky and Smith defeated fellow San Jose Sharks member Alexander Wennberg of Sweden. Sharks winger William Eklund was supposed to play for Sweden but suffered a scary wrist injury during pre-tournament games.
Team USA will face the winner of Denmark and Switzerland on Sunday. Denmark surprisingly upset Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini and a loaded Team Canada roster 2-1 on Thursday.
Puck drop for the 2025 IIHF World Championship gold medal game is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. PDT.
