LOS ANGELES — Just hours before the 2025 NHL Draft, there still is no clear answer about who the San Jose Sharks will pick at No. 2.
As it stands, there won’t be an answer until NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman steps up to announce the selection just after 4 p.m. PST. Draft prospects Anton Frondell and Michael Misa appear to be the front-runners to be selected.
With all the rumors floating, I reached out to some sources to see if the Sharks had any extra meetings with either Misa or Frondell. I was told neither player has had an official meeting with the San Jose Sharks since the draft combine.
Leading up to Friday, Frondell’s name seemed to be the player coming to the front of the line over Misa. On Friday, Misa appears to have gained a little more ground back.
Per Sheng Peng of SJHN, the Sharks are still leaning toward Misa as the No. 2 pick. Peng’s confidence in the Sharks taking Misa is “90%”.
Here’s what I know in terms of the Sharks’ feelings towards both players:
Sharks loved Misa
Per source, the San Jose Sharks walked away from the meetings with Misa with a very positive review. SHD was told, “They love him.”
Although not in-depth, the feeling is mutual between Misa and the Sharks. A report surfaced earlier in the week that Misa told another team that he didn’t think the Sharks would draft him. SHD was told that wasn’t the case.
Frondell’s meeting with the Sharks was positive, but Misa leads the way
According to a source, Anton Frondell and the San Jose Sharks had a good meeting. Although positive, they believe that Misa will be selected at No. 2.
Nobody can confirm for sure what will happen. SHD was told that the meeting with Mike Grier was positive and normal.
“[Grier was] very professional and kept everything tight, which they should,” the source said.
Like SJHN, my guess is the San Jose Sharks go with Michael Misa at No. 2 overall. I don’t believe the Sharks will trade the second overall pick, despite the rumor from The Fourth Period this morning.
The Sharks have received offers for the No. 2 pick, including one reportedly from the New York Islanders, which included Noah Dobson. Per SJHN, the Sharks rejected the offer.
Tune into ESPN at 4 p.m. PST for the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft.
