The San Jose Sharks have acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers in a trade involving Shakir Mukhamadullin.

Reports of the Sharks’ interest in acquiring Nurse have been well documented. Nurse carries a cap hit of $9.25 million. His contract still has four years remaining and will expire following the 29-30 season.

Nurse has been under fire for not playing up to the price point of his long-term deal. Part of Nurse’s contract is a full no-movement clause, so he had to approve the San Jose Sharks as the team he’ll play for. At $9.25 million, many thought his contract might need to be retained to trade him. The Oilers did not retain any salary as part of the trade.

Nurse will bring playoff experience to a young San Jose Sharks roster. In 82 games last season, Nurse had seven goals and 17 assists.

Nurse has recently played with Macklin Celebrini and Sam Dickinson at the 2026 IIHF World Championship for Team Canada.

RFA D-man Shakir Mukhamadullin will be headed north. On Monday, the San Jose Sharks gave qualifying offers to Collin Graf and Mukhamadullin.

The Sharks also traded defenseman Zack Sharp. Sharp is a 2025 NHL Draft 4th-round pick. Sharp is currently participating in the development camp. He spent last season at Western Michigan University. In 37 games, Shapr scored five goals and 14 assists.

Nurse will join newly signed defenseman Jacob Trouba on the blue line for the foreseeable future. GM Mike Grier has been busy on the first day of NHL Free Agency, specifically reshaping the defense.
