Rumors of the San Jose Sharks pursuing Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson are growing, as reports suggest the two teams have held deep trade talks.

Pierre LeBrun’s initial report last week had the Sharks as one of at least 10 teams interested in the 23-year-old. While the number of interested teams doesn’t seem to have changed, the level of interest has become clearer.

In a report from LeBrun on The Athletic on Thursday, the NHL insider reported that the San Jose Sharks and Red Wings have held talks, but the price remains high. Fellow NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, on both his audio and written 32 Thoughts podcast and blog, reported that the two sides have had “Substantive” talks about Edvinsson.

“The talks with the Sharks are substantive, I believe, with at least one serious offer between them — an offer that was not accepted by Detroit, as the story goes. (That’s not to say the Wings were unreasonable.)” Friedman wrote.

The San Jose Sharks adding Edvinsson makes sense due to his age (23) and the positional need for the young team. The Red Wings still don’t want to trade the player, but if they can’t agree to a deal, then it would be a mistake not to move him.

There is also a mini deadline to see what will happen with the d-man. As an RFA, Edvinsson must sign by Dec. 1, or he will not be eligible to play for the rest of the season.
