MONTREAL — Macklin Celebrini had two goals and an assist to lead the San Jose Sharks past the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
Collin Graf had a goal and two assists, and Mario Ferraro also scored for the Sharks, who have won two straight games. John Klingberg had two assists, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves.
Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki scored for the Canadiens, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Jakub Dobes made 17 saves. Caulfield has earned the nickname “Mr. Saturday” after scoring his 16th goal in 18 games played on Saturday this season.
San Jose Sharks forward Igor Chernyshov left the game after suffering a scary injury 20 seconds into the game. The winger was hit high and taken down by Canadiens d-man Mike Matheson. Chernyshov was playing in his first game since being recalled from the San Jose Barracuda on Thursday.
The Sharks ruled the winger out for the game following the first period, and said he was still being evaluated. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky could provide a further update following the game.
Lane Hutson thought he put the Canadiens up 1-0 at 2:57 of the first period after he found a loose puck in front of Nedeljkovic and put the puck in. The net came off its moorings right after the puck hit the net. After the review, the officials ruled they had blown the whistle before the shot leading to the goal.
Caufield gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead at 7:20 after walking down the left wing and firing a wrist shot that beat Nedeljkovic by the glove.
Celebrini tied the game 1-1 at 13:12. Collin Graf rushed into the zone and threw a hard backhand pass to Celebrini in the slot, then he fired a wrist shot by a defender and top corner over Dobes’ blocker.
Celebrini thought he put the SanJose Sharks up 2-1 with a power-play goal at 1:36 of the second period. The Canadiens challenged for offside, and the goal was wiped out.
Ferraro put the Sharks up 2-1 at 11:54. Ferraro took a shot from center point, and it deflected off something and went past the blocker of Dobes.
Graf pushed the Sharks’ lead to 3-1 at 16:20. Celebrini took a shot from the point that went right off Graf’s chest and through Dobes’ body.
Suzuki got it back to 3-2 for the Canadiens at 17:37. Ivan Demidov dropped a puck from the left wing to the slot, and Suzuki’s shot beat Nedeljkovic over the glove.
Celebrini added the empty net goal at 17:57 of the third period for the 4-2 final.
