Former San Jose Sharks forward Fabian Zetterlund has signed a contract extension with his new team.

The former Sharks winger signed a three-year deal with an AAV of $4.275 million. His contract doesn’t carry any trade protection according to PuckPedia.

When the San Jose Sharks traded him, many were caught off guard. Zetterlund appeared to be part of the Sharks’ future rebuild. Fellow Swede William Eklund and Zetterlund had become best friends instantly.

Eklund was with Zetterlund when Mike Grier called to inform Zetterlund of the trade to Ottawa. Washington Capitals d-man Rasmus Sandin accidentally broke the news to Zetterlund just before Grier called.

Zack Ostapchuk was the main piece the Sharks acquired in return for Zetterlund.

Much like he did during the season, the San Jose Sharks acquired him in 2022-23, Zetterlund struggled for the remainder of the season. After his trade to the Ottawa Senators, Zetterlund had just two goals and three assists in 20 games.

In 22-23 with the Sharks, Zetterlund didn’t register a goal in 23 games.

The Senators and Zetterlund avoided arbitration with this contract. At its completion, Zetterlund can become an unrestricted free agent for the first time.
