Three players were recalled from the AHL as the San Jose Sharks deal with multiple injuries for their game against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.
On Monday, San Jose recalled Danil Gushchin, Luca Cagnoni, and Jimmy Schuldt.
Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters he’s still working through the line combinations, which is understandable. Forwards Thomas Bordeleau and Zack Ostapchuk suffered injuries against the Calgary Flames and won’t play. Defensemen Jack Thompson and Jan Rutta also won’t play against the Canucks due to injuries sustained on Sunday.
Warsofsky told reporters about each player’s injury. Thompson and Bordeleau have upper-body injuries, and Ostapchuk and Rutta have lower-body injuries.
Of the four, Thompson, Bordeleau, and Ostapchuk can play in the Calder Cup Playoffs with the San Jose Barracuda. Luckily for the ‘Cuda, all three are considered day-to-day. Rutta is also day-to-day.
Cam Lund will return to the Sharks lineup after missing Sunday’s game due to illness. Klim Kostin also has a lower-body injury, so all three call-ups should play.
“It’s frustrating. We’re just hitting the injury bug at the wrong time, but that’s the game of hockey,” Warsofsky said. “That’s life. All of us that are in this right now are going through some adversity as far as what our roster is, the injuries, and not winning hockey games down the stretch, but it is what it is.”
Vincent Desharnais is likely out for the rest of the Sharks season
San Jose Sharks defenseman Vincent Desharnais is also on the road trip but won’t play tonight and is unlikely to play game 82 against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
“We’re not there yet,” Warsofsky said on if Desharnais can play Wednesday. “I’d say it is highly unlikely.”
The Sharks acquired Desharnais from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline.
The 6’7 defenseman suited up for seven games with San Jose with one shot. He averaged 17:49 minutes a night and was paired with Luca Cagnoni on defense for three games.
