Macklin Celebrini just finished an MVP-caliber season with the San Jose Sharks and will get a massive contract extension.
Starting July 1, the 19-year-old will be eligible to sign his first contract extension with the Sharks. During his exit interview on Saturday, Celerbini told reporters that he is open to signing that deal this summer.
“I’m open to it,” Celebrini said. “I haven’t thought about it. The season that just ended, and I haven’t really thought about anything like that.”
The details of what he might ask the San Jose Sharks for in his next contract are not something he has even begun to think about. All the superstar center knows is that he loves the city of San Jose and the team he plays for. The newest NHL Collective Bargaining agreement is taking effect on Sept. 18. Players who are signing extensions will no longer be able to sign for a maximum of eight years after Sept. 18. After that date passes, players signing extensions can only sign for a maximum of seven years.
“I’m just open to every possibility. There’s nothing really that goes into it. It goes hand in hand with me. I want to commit to this team and being here,” Celebrini said. “I love it here. I’m just open to whatever happens. There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it.”
Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard and Celebrini are both from Vancouver, BC. Celebrini told reporters that he is close with the 2023 NHL Draft No. 1 pick, and that he’s spoken to him about what he went through during the 2025 offseason and his extension talks.
“Connor [Bedard] and I are pretty good friends. I talked to him a little bit just about his situation,” Celebrini said. “He approached it differently, and every guy’s situation is going to be a little bit different.”
Celebrini’s next Sharks contract will surely be expensive, but after breaking Joe Thornton’s record of most points in a single season and being the future of the team, he’s worth every penny.
