The Anaheim Ducks defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in the preseason on Monday.
The Ducks fielded a heavy, NHL-quality squad, while the Sharks went with mostly competitive, borderline NHL-caliber players. Many of the players in the lineup will be headed to the AHL.
The Ducks got goals from Cutter Gauthier, Frank Vatrano, and Radko Gudas. Ville Husso played the entire game, stopping 22 shots.
The SanJose Sharks got goals from Pavol Regenda and Adam Gaudette. Jakub Skarek made 13 saves on 16 shots before being replaced by Gabe Carriere. Carriere stopped all 14 shots he faced.
Head coach Ryan Warsofsky wanted his team to be much more competitive than they were against the Vegas Golden Knights in the team’s second preseason game.
The Sharks pushed hard to get back into the game after the Ducks scored three straight goals in the second period. Shakir Mukhamadullin stood out for much of the night, especially in the offensive zone.
His one-timer from the point created multiple opportunities and chaos, including Regenda’s goal.
The Sharks will be back on the ice for practice on Tuesday.
Gauthier gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 6:22 of the second period. Ryan Strome fed Gauthier from behind the net to the top of the left circle, and his one-timer beat Skarek by the glove.
Gudas made it 2-0 47 seconds later with a snap shot by the blocker of Skarek.
Vatrano makes it 3-0 at 9:13 after Tyson Hinds fed a pass across to the left of the net for an open tap-in by Skarek. Carriere entered the game following the goal.
Regenda got a power-play goal for the Sharks at 13:29 to make it 3-1. Shakir Mukhamadullin’s one-timer from the point deflected off Regenda’s skate and by the Glove of Husso.
Gaudette made it 3-2 at 15:59 of the third period. After dragging the puck past a defender, Gaudette fired a wrist shot by the blocker of Husso.
