The San Jose Sharks have added to their organizational goalie depth by signing Jakub Skarek to a one-year contract.
Skarek’s deal is worth $775k. According to PuckPedia, his contract is a one-way standard deal.
Skarek is a former third-round pick of the New York Islanders back in 2018. He was made a group six UFA after certain conditions of his previous contract were met. In 22 games last season, the new San Jose Sharks goalie had a 5-13-1 record. He finished the season with a .884 save percentage and a 3.52 GAA.
“Jakub has a plethora of professional experience in net at just 25 years old,” Sharks GM Mike Grier said in the release. “He is a big, athletic goaltender with a lot of compete in his game.”
Skarek made his NHL debut for the Islanders last season, appearing in two games. He made his first career start against the Florida Panthers on Feb. 2. He allowed five goals on 32 shots. He appeared in relief against the New York Rangers on Feb. 25, stopping all seven shots he faced.
With the departures of Alexandar Georgiev and Georgi Romanov, the Sharks were left slightly thin on their goalie count. GM Mike Grier acquired goalie Alex Nedeljkovic from the Pittsburgh Penguins to be Yaroslav Askarov’s backup.
San Jose also re-signed goalie Gabriel Carriere after a breakout rookie season with the San Jose Barracuda. Carriere finished last season with 22 AHL games and 25 ECHL games.
