San Jose Sharks forwards William Eklund and Alexander Wennberg had points in Sweden’s 2-1 win over Switzerland at the Czech Hockey Games.
Eklund scored the game-winning goal for Sweden on the power play. The Sharks winger played 19:17 and had five shots on goal. The winger was listed on Sweden’s second line with New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad and former San Jose Sharks forward Marcus Sorensen.
Zibanejad also scored on the power-play for Sweden, with Wennberg earning the primary assist from a goalline pass to the slot.
Both Sharks forwards will play for Sweden at the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Championship, and there is a potential for the duo to play on the same line. For much of the final part of the NHL season, Eklund and Wennberg were on the same line.
“Yeah, that’d be fun [to play on the same line],” Eklund told reporters at his exit interview. “We’ll see what happens, but yeah, we know each other.”
Wennberg played a third-line role for Sweden with Anaheim Ducks forward Isac Lundestrom on his wing.
Eklund and Wennberg are vying for spots on Sweden’s 2026 Olympic roster. Neither player was picked for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, but they understand the importance of this year’s World Championship.
“I don’t know. I’m just trying to play my best and be the best player I can out there,” Eklund said. “Let’s see what happens. My play for my country is the biggest thing here.”
