Newly named Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Thornton doesn’t have an official role with the San Jose Sharks, for now.
During his pre-draft availability, Sharks general manager Mike Grier told reporters he’s hoping to lock down Thornton as an official development coach.
“Hopefully, he’ll sign the contract and help out. He’s already basically been doing player development for the love of the game,” Grier said. “Hopefully, sometime this summer, we can get him on board officially as a development coach.”
Following round one of the 2024 NHL Draft, Grier joked with reporters that Thornton would be the Sharks’ “Director of Vibes.” Although jokingly again, he referenced the new Hall of Famer keeping that title even after he signs the contract.
Thornton housed Macklin Celebrini for his rookie season. The relationship the two built will last a lifetime. Celebrini and fellow San Jose Sharks young core piece Will Smith got to learn from the game’s legends.
“It was an honor to play with [Thornton]. He was the best passer of the puck I’ve played with,” the Sharks GM said. “He just anticipated plays so well. Saw plays happening a step before they did, and found lanes and through layers where you never really thought he was going to be able to get you the puck. Next thing you know, [the] puck hits your stick, and you’ve got an empty net.”
Thornton was spotted on the ice multiple times throughout the 24-25 NHL season. The San Jose Sharks have said he’s always at the rink and helping with the club. The goal is to have him officially rejoin the organization.
