San Jose Sharks star Macklin Celebrini made history on Wednesday as he was named to the Canadian Olympic Hockey roster.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that the Sharks’ top center made Team Canada. The debate over Celebrini not making Canada has been strictly about his experience alone. At 19, Celebrini is the youngest NHLer to be named to any Canadian Olympic hockey roster.

Age shouldn’t matter, as Celebrini’s play is at an MVP level. Currently on an eight-game point streak, the San Jose Sharks’ leading scorer has 60 points (21 goals, 39 assists) in just 39 games. If he can drag a still rebuilding Sharks team into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there’s a great chance he is nominated and a frontrunner for the NHL’s Hart Trophy.

Celebrini may not have Stanley Cup Playoff experience, but he has played with Canada’s captain, Sidney Crosby. Playing with Crosby at the World Championships likely went a long way toward the Team Canada management group‘s decision-making process.

The San Jose Sharks superstar is not only deserving of being on Canada’s roster, but it should never have been a debate; it has been a fun one. Celebrini and the Sharks host the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday, and the newest Olympian could speak before the game after his head coach.
