LOS ANGELES — The San Jose Sharks own two first-round picks at Friday night’s 2025 NHL Draft.
Speculation has begun to run wild just hours before the festivities start in Los Angeles. Across the NHL, there are rumors that New York Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson will be traded. Then, on top of that, the Islanders will try to move again to acquire James Hagens with a top-five pick.
When it comes to the San Jose Sharks, the biggest rumor around the draft is if they will pick Michael Misa or Anton Frondell No. 2 overall. But what about their second first-round pick this year?
Well, according to Sharks general manager Mike Grier, all options are on the table.
“Everything’s on the table. We’re definitely open to moving it, but we also know, looking at our board, that there’s going to be a good player there available,” Grier said. [We’ll] see how the draft goes. You never know.”
Grier told reporters that he expects to make the No. 2 selection, but No. 30 remains unknown. The Sharks’ GM has said that he plans to utilize his high-value draft capital as effectively as possible, including through trades.
Around the NHL Draft, anything can happen. With a decentralized draft this year, it has been more challenging to distinguish between what is true and what is false. The going phrase amongst the LA crowd is “things can change in a hurry.”
Grier says he expects to see a good amount of player movement soon.
“I think it’ll be busy. There are lots of things that go into it. You have some teams that are coming out of the rebuild. You’ve got some teams that want to take the next step as far as playoff-wise. And [you have those] maybe a situation where it’s not the strongest free agent class,” Grier said. “I think you have [to] combine all these things with the cap going up. [I] wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a decent amount of movement in the next week.”
Only time will tell what Grier and the San Jose Sharks do. Depending on the return, the Sharks could easily move the No. 30 selection to improve their current roster.
