The San Jose Sharks have reached the cap floor after adding defensemen Dmitry Orlov and Nick Leddy.
Orlov, an unrestricted free agent, signed a two-year contract with an AAV of $6.5 million. The russian defenseman spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes.
In 76 games last season, Orlov scored six goals, 22 assists, and was +16. He averaged 20 minutes a night for the Hurricanes.
“Dmitry is a strong, two-way defenseman who brings physicality and versatility on the ice,” Sharks GM Mike Grier said in a release. “He has a wealth of NHL experience, both in the regular season and playoffs, and his Stanley Cup championship pedigree is a valuable addition to our team. We are happy to have him.”
Orlov is a Stanley Cup Champion after he helped the Washington Capitals win in 2018. A terrific skater who can shoot the puck very well is a nice addition to the San Jose Sharks Lineup.
Sharks claim Leddy from Blues
Now, former St. Louis Blues defenseman Nick Leddy was claimed by the Sharks on Thursday. The 2013 Stanley Cup Champion joins the Sharks via waivers after the Blues failed to find a trade partner.
After Orlov’s $6.5 million AAV deal was signed, the San Jose Sharks were just below the NHL’s salary cap floor. Leddy is entering the final year of a three-year contract with an AAV of $4 million.
The addition of the veteran left-handed d-man pushes the Sharks over the floor.
