Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns will pass San Jose Sharks legend Patrick Marleau on the NHL’s Iron Man list on Thursday.
The Hurricanes will start their western road trip with a visit to the SAP Center, and Burns, a former Norris Trophy winner with the Sharks, will play his 911th consecutive game.
The former defenseman and forward just turned 40 years old on March 9. To Bunzie, age is clearly just a number, as he has kept himself in great shape and still plays top minutes for the Hurricanes.
Through 67 games this season, Burns has averaged 21:28 of ice time a night. He isn’t producing as much offense as he once did, but he still has 22 points (five goals, 18 assists). The beard hasn’t missed a game since the 2013-14 season.
Burns played the majority of his career with the San Jose Sharks. The fun-loving defenseman played 798 games in Teal. The Minnesota Wild originally drafted him as a forward in the iconic 2003 NHL draft.
Marleau will likely keep the edge in total games played with 1,779, the most by anyone in NHL history. Burns will play in career game 1,483 on Thursday.
