Veteran Sharks Defenseman Breaks NHL’s All-Time Record For Blocked Shots

San Jose Sharks veteran defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic blocked three shots on Monday against the Toronto Maple Leafs to tie him with Mark Giordano for the most in NHL history.

Monday night marked Vlasic’s 1,307th career game, all with San Jose. The Sharks have 20 more games remaining this season, and Vlasic will almost certainly take sole possession of the record.

Vlasic broke the record on Tuesday after he blocked one shot in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres during a 6-2 win.

Vlasic and the Sharks snapped an eight-game losing streak with an improbable comeback shootout win over the Maple Leafs 3-2. Jack Thompson, a Toronto area native, scored his third career NHL goal with more than 20 friends and family in attendance.

In the epicenter of hockey, the Sharks showed resilience against a team vying for a Stanley Cup. Vlasic finished with 14:12 TOI and was a +1. He was on the ice for a critical penalty kill in the third period and played 2:50 while shorthanded.

Earlier this season, Vlasic became the only defenseman in San Jose Sharks history to play 1,300 games for the club.
