Much has been made about who the next San Jose Sharks captain following Logan Couture’s retirement.

The Top options are Calder Torphy finalist Macklin Celebrini and veteran Tyler Toffoli. Mario Ferraro, currently an alternate captain, is also in the mix to be the next Sharks captain.

However, for Celebrini, the 18-year-old displayed top leadership qualities even as a rookie. He led by example on the ice and always put his best foot forward during practice and off-ice activities.

The San Jose Sharks rookie has looked up to Pittsburgh Penguins captain and legend Sidney Crosby his entire life. Celebrini is taking pointers from Crosby during the 2025 IIHF World Championship. Crosby is likely to be named captain of the team.

But what does Sharks GM Mike Grier think of naming Celebrini as team captain? He hasn’t ruled it out.

“I haven’t really given too much thought to the captaincy. Once things settle down and we get through today, I think I’ll start to think about a little bit more,” Grier said following the NHL Draft Lottery results. “We have a good leadership group here. I think that’s something he can grow into, being part of that leadership group. He’s got a lot on his plate already as an 18-year-old kid, playing and handling the things he has to do. I’m not saying yes. I’m not saying no, but I don’t know if it’s the time to add something else like that to his plate.”

The San Jose Sharks fell one spot at the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery after the New York Islanders won the first overall pick with a 3.5% chance.

Celebrini was the youngest player in the NHL during the 24-25 season. He will remain one of the league’s youngest next season.
