In his first chance at getting into the Hockey Hall of Fame, San Jose Sharks legend Joe Thornton has officially been named an inductee.
Thornton is inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside five other players and two builders. Long-time hopeful Alexander Mogilny has finally been named an inductee.
After being drafted first overall by the Boston Bruins, Thornton was traded to the Sharks in 2005. He then spent 15 years with the Sharks.
In 1,104 games, Thornton scored 430 goals, 1,539 assists, and is the all-time leading points scorer in Sharks franchise history. The one piece of hardware Thornton lacks is a Stanley Cup, but his accolades are more than enough to be a Hall of Famer.
The same year Thornton was traded to the Sharks, he won the NHL MVP award after scoring 29 goals and 96 assists. In 58 games following the trade to San Jose, Thornton had 20 goals and 72 assists.
The San Jose Sharks retired Thornton’s No. 19 last November. His jersey is just the second in team history to be retired.
He becomes the first player in NHL history to spend the majority of their career with the Sharks and be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
