According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the St. Louis Blues are “motivated to move Jordan Kyrou’s contract.” With the San Jose Sharks in the market for a top-nine winger, Kyrou could be a perfect fit.
On July 2nd, Seravalli joined the Kevin Karius show and spoke about NHL free agency as a whole.
Kyrou is a fast, high-scoring winger who has scored more than goals in three of the last four seasons. He’s also scored over 70 points in three of the previous four seasons.
There was speculation surrounding the draft that the Montreal Canadiens and the Blues had discussed Kyrou. The Blues ended up making a trade with the Canadiens, but not for Kyrou.
St. Louis dealt forward Zack Bolduc for defenseman Logan Mailloux.
“I think the Montreal Canadiens is that they are still trying for Jordan Kyrou. My understanding is they hit the pause button,” Seravalli said on July 2nd. “I think there are other teams in the mix.”
The San Jose Sharks can significantly improve their team with an addition like Kyrou. At 27 years old, Kyrou carries an $8.125 million AAV for the next six seasons.
On July 1st, Kyrou’s contract added a full no-trade clause. Seravalli reports that he doesn’t think that will get in the way of a potential trade.
“Even though Kyrou has arrived in this spot in time where he has a full no-trade clause and control, maybe that doesn’t get in the way,” Seravalli said. “I think St. Louis is pretty motivated to move that contract.”
The Blues are up against the cap, and the San Jose Sharks helped them lower their salary by claiming Nick Leddy.
The rumors surrounding Dallas Stars young winger Jason Robertson have cooled. There is also a potential fit with the Sharks and Robertson, but Kyrou appears to be more available.
Macklin Celebrini with Jordan Kyrou and Tyler Toffoli on his wings looks incredibly dangerous on paper. Plus, Kyrou has entered his prime. He was a rookie in 2019 when the Blues won the Stanley Cup. He did not play a game during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Sharks have the cheap assets, such as prospects and/or draft picks, that would match the presumed high trade price Kyrou is expected to cost.
